Billing and credits

Your plan sets the numbers. This page explains the ideas. Billing & Plan shows the figures.

Open Billing & Plan from Profile & Settings, or from the plan card in the sidebar. The sidebar card is a summary: plan name, days left in the period, AI credits, exams, and storage. The billing page is the full picture.

Published prices, if your workspace can check out, are listed there as monthly or yearly. Enterprise prices that are not self-serve send you to talk to ZeroExam instead of a card form. Checkout, when it is enabled, is handled by Stripe. Manage in Stripe updates the card. Invoices on the billing page open the Stripe invoice.

Cancelling a paid plan keeps access until the period ends. You can resume before that date.

A credit is the unit of AI work for the billing period. Question generation and a completed assistant reply spend credits. While a job is in flight, some credits can show as reserved so two jobs cannot spend the same balance.

When the available balance hits zero, generation stops. It does not keep drafting for free. A requested question count is a target; running out of credits is one reason the final count is lower.

The billing page shows:

  • How many credits the plan includes this period
  • How many are left
  • How many are reserved
  • When the period resets

Some plans allow top-up packs. Buying a pack adds credits above the period allowance. If the plan does not allow top-ups, the pack list may be empty or the purchase stays disabled. That is the plan, not a broken button.

On-demand usage is optional. Turn it on only if you want metered use after included credits, and set a spend cap in USD. Extra usage stops at the cap. Leave it off if a hard stop at the included balance is what you want.

Plans also cap how fast credits can be spent, not only how many exist in the period. Two rolling windows run in the background:

  • A 5-hour window — a session-style ceiling on credits spent across all AI features in the workspace, with a separate, smaller ceiling per member.
  • A weekly window — a rolling 7-day ceiling, again for the workspace and per member.

The windows meter credits the moment a job reserves them, across every surface (assistant chat, document work, exams, search), so starting a new conversation does not reset the count. If you hit a window, requests are refused with a “rate limited” message and a time when the window resets — the message tells you. Waiting it out, or asking an admin to raise the plan’s window, is all that is needed; nothing is lost and the balance is unaffected. The billing page shows the window settings for your plan.

The same page is where document size, page count, active documents, export counts, and similar allowances are enforced. These guides do not repeat the numbers, because they differ by plan and can change when you switch plans. After a checkout, the page refreshes entitlements before the new limits apply. If payment succeeded and the plan still looks old, wait for that refresh or open billing again.

A help screen that promises unlimited exams on every free plan is not a contract. If your plan caps active exams, the billing page is the number that is enforced.
