Exam and question generation
Generation drafts questions from the structure entries you selected. You decide what a student is allowed to see.
Question types
Section titled “Question types”The generator and the question editor use five types. The app may label them in plain language. The stored type is one of these.
| Type | What the student does |
|---|---|
mcq | Chooses one option |
true_false | Marks the statement true or false |
fill_blank | Completes a sentence |
short | Writes a brief answer |
long | Writes an extended answer |
There are not thirteen generation types. A help screen that says otherwise is out of date.
Difficulty
Section titled “Difficulty”easy · medium · hard · mixed
mixed asks for a spread across the set. It does not pin every question to one level.
Cognitive level
Section titled “Cognitive level”A question can be tagged with a Bloom level so the paper is not only recall.
| Level | Asks the student to |
|---|---|
remember | Recall a fact |
understand | Explain a concept |
apply | Use it in a new situation |
analyze | Break something into parts |
evaluate | Make a judgement |
create | Produce something new |
Review status
Section titled “Review status”| Status | Meaning for you | What a share link does |
|---|---|---|
draft | Not reviewed | Not served by the link you copy from Share |
approved | Accepted | Served |
rejected | Refused | Never served |
archived | Kept, out of active use | Never served |
Approve the questions students should sit. Share will not create a link until at least one question is approved. The dialog shows an Include draft questions switch, but copying the link does not save that choice, and opening Share clears it. Rejected and archived questions are never served. An integrator can still set includeDrafts on the API; the teacher dialog does not.
Exam status
Section titled “Exam status”| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
draft | Still being assembled |
review | Under review |
approved | Ready to deliver |
archived | Retired. Sharing is turned off |
What generation actually does
Section titled “What generation actually does”- Grounds each question in the structure entries you selected, and records the source document and page range.
- Drops near-duplicate questions instead of filling a quota with restatements.
- Spends AI credits. Work stops when credits run out rather than producing unbilled questions.
A requested count is a target. Deduplication and an empty credit balance can both leave you short. Add the rest by hand, or generate one more after you have credits again.
On the exam page
Section titled “On the exam page”While a generation job is running, editing is locked and questions appear as they are saved. When it finishes you can:
- Edit the stem, options, marks, and answer.
- Remove a question from the paper.
- Add manually.
- Generate with AI to request one extra question.
The question stays in the workspace Question Bank and can be reused on a later exam. Bank membership does not put a rejected question onto a share link.
